Nathan as a high level wizard, is addressed by many people as "Master", a formality and recognition of his status, not that anyone in the story is a slave. Katherine/Katie/Katryn is the servant of the manor, valued by Nathan as she puts up with his fantastical wizardly lifestyle (more of that to come later).
Katryn runs his estate whenever Nathan is away on an adventure.
